Due to an elbow injury, San Diego Padres right-hand pitcher Yu Darvish will miss the remainder of the 2023 campaign, manager Bob Melvin informed media on Tuesday.
In 136.1 innings over 24 starts, Darvish finished 8–10 with a 4.56 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 141 strikeouts for the Padres in 2023. Since making a start against the Milwaukee Brewers on August 25, he has not pitched.
After joining the Padres in a seven-player trade to acquire him from the Chicago Cubs, Darvish played in his debut season in San Diego in 2021.
He has played in nine full MLB seasons (2012–2014, 2016–2021), participating in five All-Star Games, and placing second twice in the Cy Young awards.
Throughout his MLB career, Darvish has played for the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cubs, and Padres.
Under Melvin, he played a crucial role in the Padres’ 2022 season triumph. Darvish’s commanding victory in Game 1 helped the 89-73 Padres finish second in the National League West and defeat the fancied New York Mets in the wild-card series.
