“He can’t hit with enough force.” Ryan Garcia discusses Gervonta Davis’s strength
“KingRy” has inked a contract to fight Devin Haney when he returns to the ring on April 20. Garcia will be competing in his first fight since defeating Oscar Duarte via knockout in December. For the previous temporary champion, that stoppage victory was crucial.
The fight happened only a few months after Garcia lost to “Tank” in his career’s first loss. It was the biggest pay-per-view of the year when the two celebrities faced off in Las Vegas in April. Garcia had some early success in the opening round, but Davis had the majority of the action.
In the last moments of the second round, Davis thoroughly defeated Garcia. The teenage boxer managed to get up off the floor, but a body shot ended up stopping him in the seventh round. In an interview conducted over a year after the fight, Garcia was asked to rank Davis’s power.
Garcia claimed in an interview with Jack Alter that the lightweight champion doesn’t hit all that hard. Rather, more damage is done by Davis’ accurate punches than anything else. “KingRy” said in the interview (via Boxing Social):
“He is not a strong striker.” I am informing you. It’s his precision. The blows that injure you are the ones you are blind to. not the ones you actually see. Some people hurt even when you can’t help but notice it. That is not who he is. He is an appropriate description of who he is.
