Jameis Winston, quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, just agreed to a 2-year deal with .
The New Orleans Saints, who have quarterback Jameis Winston, will resign, as the team stated on Monday. The deal will be in effect for a full year. According to ESPN, the deal could be worth up to $12 million, depending on incentives, while the NFL Network claims that it will be worth at least $5.5 million.
The day after Drew Brees, the Saints’ starting quarterback for fifteen years, declared his retirement, action was taken.
In the spring of last year, Winston, then 27 years old, inked a $1.1 million, one-year contract with New Orleans. He completed 11 passes in 2020 for 56 yards, including a postseason trick-play touchdown.
Taysom Hill started as quarterback in 2020’s four games without Brees, with Winston serving as his backup.
In the 2015 draft, Winston was chosen first overall by Tampa Bay. Winston started 70 games in his five seasons with the Bucs, throwing for 19,737 yards, 121 touchdowns, and 88 interceptions.
Message board: Can Sean Payton ignite Jameis Winston’s career the way he did for Drew Brees?
The Saints would have only had one quarterback on the field with Hill gone. The team’s management made the decision to re-sign Winston as soon as the offseason started. Since the one-year contract is estimated to be worth up to $12 million, money was never going to be an issue. Making a trade for Russell Wilson or Deshaun Watson would not have been viable.
What the Saints should make of this Holder: Winston should be the favorite to start, but he still has one more season with the Saints to iron out his differences. Do I envision Hill and the Saints playing an open competition? Yes, in fact. But I’d be surprised if Hill overcame Winston. As his 30-interception 2019 season is still too recent in memory, Winston, the starting quarterback, still has a lot to prove.
Winston’s long-term success is by no means guaranteed. The Saints have watched Winston twice a year for his first five years in the NFL. We’ll see if Winston can put an end to his mistakes and work alongside good players like Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas in addition to a strong offensive line.
