Jason Licht, GM of the Buccaneers, just announced that Todd Bowles is no longer the head coach.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024 will have to make some tough choices as a result of their unexpected postseason success in 2023.
Numerous players are set to become free agents in Tampa, but head coach Todd Bowles seems to believe that bringing back quarterback Baker Mayfieldโwho had the best season of his careerโis the team’s top priority. Mayfield led the Bucs to an NFC South title and a playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
From the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, Bowles stated on Tuesday on Good Morning Football, “It’s a really high priority, clearly.” We love Baker, even though the league season doesn’t start for a few days. Baker’s year was extraordinary. He was a perfect fit for the group. You want to hope to build on it because the connection between him, the receivers, and the offense as a whole was excellent. I am aware of the business aspect of it. We like Bake, as I mentioned, and we hope things work out.”
The top overall choice in the 2018 NFL Draft, Mayfield, played with the Cleveland Browns for four seasons before splitting the 2022 season between the Los Angeles Rams and the Carolina Panthers. He reached career highs of 4,044 throwing yards and 28 touchdowns while playing in Tampa.
Despite their optimism for Mayfield’s re-signing, the Bucs may also consider drafting a quarterback in the draft, as Kyle Trask is about to begin his final season and their quarterback is unsigned.
General manager Jason Licht stated on Tuesday at the combine, “You can never rule that out.” “You never discount it. But I will say that resigning Baker is the main priority at the moment.”
