Joe Schoen general manager of New York Giants declared that he would shortly be retiring
It would be inaccurate to say that the Giants are in a desperate search for Daniel Jones’ replacement.
They’re not in a desperate situation. They never imagined that they would be so close to the top choices, but here they are.
Due to their 2023 setbacks, they were ranked sixth overall in 2024. Unless a team is adamantly certain they have their franchise quarterback, the team at number six should give it serious thought.
They will, too. Indeed, they are.
At this week’s NFL Scouting Combine, general manager Joe Schoen stated, “Where we are at six, we’re going to look at everything.” Every post will be considered. It’s a solid draft, but you hope you’re not back there; you don’t want to be selecting in the top 10. Overall, it’s a strong draft, and we should be able to select the best player after assessing each position and possibly landing a decent player.
A team in the elite quarterback market does not want to be sitting outside the top five this year.
In order to select one, two, or three, the Bears, Commanders, and Patriots could all choose quarterbacks.
Thus, after three rounds, Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels might not be available.
The Giants at No. 6 and the Titans at No. 7 might take quarterback, while the Cardinals (No. 4) and Chargers (No. 5) are not. The Falcons (ranked eighth) are searching for a quarterback.
Depending on the flavor a team wants, J.J. McCarthy, Bo Nix, and Michael Penix Jr. are in variable order at the second quarterback tier in this draft. At number six, picking any one of them seems like a big ask.
Schoen declared, “It’s a terrific quarterback draft.” It’s not limited to the top. I believe that a few men in the mid-levels will make excellent No. 2s. Some players have the potential to draft as the third pick overall.
The Giants will bring in a quarterback to join Jones and Tommy DeVito, who is in his second year, as Schoen has already stated.
Jones was awarded a four-year contract worth $160 million by Schoen last year. This season, he is guaranteed $35 million, so he needs to be on the field. Schoen stated that he anticipates Jones, if healthy, to start the season.
Jones’ guaranteed salary expires after this season, and the Giants have the option to terminate the agreement in 2025 for a $22 million dead money charge.
Thus, the Giants and Jones are wed for the time being, but possibly not for long.
Although Jones suffered a second neck injury and then tore his ACL after accepting the new contract, Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll still have faith in him. The Giants now consider him a medical risk.
Daniel is our starting quarterback, and I have faith in him,” Schoen remarked.
The Giants organization doesn’t appear to be too motivated to move up into the top three.
If one of the candidates blows the Giants away throughout the interview process, that appetite might be stoked.
