Brewers announce the departure of Pat Murphy.
Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Arnold said in a statement, “Pat Murphy brings a depth of experience, expertise, and enthusiasm for the game of baseball as well as a familiarity with the Brewers organization, players, staff, and culture. The last few seasons have seen the franchise experience unheard-of levels of success, and Pat has played a major role in that run. Pat’s decision to stay with the Brewers is appreciated, and we are happy to announce him as manager today.
The Brewers also revealed that All-Star Rickie Weeks, who will take over as deputy manager, will work with Murphy. For the past two seasons, Weeks, 41, assisted the Brewers in player development. Earlier this month, he received a promotion to special assistant to player development.
“Rickie is a vital member of our coaching staff and was a hard-nosed, homegrown player for the Brewers for many years,” stated Arnold. We anticipate that in his new position, he will bring many of the qualities he had as a player to the dugout.
The remaining coaching staff is expected to return for the upcoming season, according to officials. Quintin Berry, the coach of first base, Néstor Corredor, the Major League field coordinator, Connor Dawson, the hitting coach, assistant pitching coach Jim Henderson, Chris Hook, the pitching coach, Jason Lane, the third base coach, Walker McKinven, the run prevention coordinator, and hitting coach Ozzie Timmons are among those involved. But for the upcoming season, Corredor, Henderson, and McKinven will all have new titles.
Counsell guided the team to its longest stretch of continuous success, which included four postseason berths over the previous six seasons, and he also set a Brewers record for lifetime managerial victories. After Ron Roenicke was sacked as manager of the Brewers in 2015, Counsell assumed the position. After that 2015 season, he brought Murphy on board as his bench coach.
Murphy was Counsell’s collegiate coach at Notre Dame, where he won three Midwest Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year awards and had a record of 318-116-1. Murphy and Counsell will compete in the NL Central.
Murphy’s only big league management experience dates back to 2015, when he managed the San Diego Padres in an acting capacity following Bud Black’s dismissal and finished 42–54. Murphy joined Counsell’s Milwaukee staff following the 2015 season when the Padres chose Andy Green as their full-time manager.
