Don Smerek, a former defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys, lost his fight with cancer last week. He was sixty-six years old.
Smerek played collegiate football for Nevada. After going undrafted, Smerek eventually signed with the Cowboys in 1981. Following that, the defensive lineman participated in 69 games throughout his seven-year tenure with the squad.
In Dallas, he finished his career with 14.5 sacks.
“He was a terrific teammate, a fantastic person,” said Randy White, a former Cowboys star and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, of the man. “As a football player, he was really reliable and always there for me.” Don had one thing going for him as a football player: he was all in. On third downs, he would rush the passer.
White also recalled how often he went fishing with Smerek.
“A great football partner who helped us become good friends off the field.” He used to be my fishing partner, and we would engage in all other activities and fishing together.
