ย After being found guilty of two charges of second-degree canine cruelty, Buggs was eventually freed on a $600 bond.
According to court records, the Tuscaloosa Police Department discovered two โemaciatedโ and โseriously malnourishedโ dogs on the back porch of a home that Buggs had rented on March 28. According to court documents, a neighbor claimed that a pit bull and a Rottweiler mix had been abandoned there without food or water for at least ten days.
Eventually, the pit bull was put to sleep. According to witnesses, Buggs left the house on or around March 19.
Although the Chiefs declined to comment, a representative indicated the team was aware of the circumstances.
This Monday, Trey Robinson, Buggsโ agent, released a statement in which he said that the player โvehemently deniesโ the accusations and that the dogs were not his.
Robinson refused to answer more questions, stating, โMr. Buggs does not support the mistreatment of any animal under any circumstances.โ
Robinson claimed that Buggs is the focus of a โsubversive campaignโ to close the hookah lounge he runs and that he was unaware they were still on the premises.
Former Alabama player Buggs, 27, played for the Pittsburgh Steelers for three seasons and the Detroit Lions for two. He signed on as a practice squad member with the Chiefs, the Super Bowl champions, in January and was awarded a futures contract in February.
