Baker Mayfield’s signing was announced by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Philadelphia Eagles announced the signing of tampa bay buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield

Audacious Prediction: Baker Mayfield to the Patriots? When the New England Patriots enter the field the following season, they will undoubtedly have a new quarterback on their roster. It’s unclear, though, if that new member was acquired through free agency or the NFL Draft.

However, according to ESPN source Jeremy Fowler’s most recent forecast, the Patriots might surprise everyone by signing quarterback Baker Mayfield, who is now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

By acquiring quarterback Baker Mayfield, the Patriots “submarined the Buccaneers,” according to Fowler. “And the Cleveland administration that selected Mayfield first overall in the 2018 draft included members of the Patriots’ new brain trust, such as top personnel man Eliot Wolf and personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith.”

Wolf and Highsmith worked together for two seasons in Cleveland (2018–19), with the former holding the position of vice president of player personnel and the latter as assistant general manager. Both will now have significant responsibilities in the Patriots front office.

Following the departure of Bill Belichick, Wolf rose through the ranks to become the de facto general manager in New England after entering the Patriots front office in 2022 as the director of scouting. Highsmith, meanwhile, just started working as a personnel executive for Wolf in Foxboro during the offseason.

They don’t, however, have the only direct connection to Mayfield in New England; the offensive coordinator of the Patriots at the moment, Alex Van Pelt, also spent time in Cleveland with the Buccaneers signal-caller.

Although past relationships between staff members and athletes do not necessarily translate into interest in that player, it does appear that Mayfield may move from Tampa to Foxboro.

After spending the best year of his career with the Buccaneers, the former No. 1 overall pick is back. The 28-year-old quarterback led the Buccaneers to a 9-8 season while throwing for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 17 games.

The Bucs, who lost to the Detroit Lions in the following round, defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 32–9 in the Wild Card round with Mayfield’s assistance.

He is now expected to rank among the best quarterbacks available in free agency this offseason because of his comeback in Tampa. This represents a significant change from a year ago, when the Carolina Panthers released Mayfield following their 1-5 start to the season. Mayfield later signed with the Los Angeles Rams, where he started as the team’s quarterback when Matthew Stafford was sidelined due to injury.

Although the Patriots possess the third overall pick this offseason, which they might very well utilize to choose their next franchise quarterback, Mayfield’s agreement would free them up to use that pick on an offensive tackle or receiver.
