Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have been confirmed for an exhibition in Saudi Arabia
A star-studded lineup for the ‘Six Kings Slam’ exhibition event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, includes Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Among them are Djokovic and Nadal’s teammates Carlo Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Holger Rune, and Jannik Sinner, the most recent Australian Open champion.
The ATP Next Gen Finals were hosted in the nation’s capital for the first time last year, indicating Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to enter the tennis scene.
The General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia announced the event and referred to it as a “big new tennis tournament.” It is scheduled to take place in October on an unspecified date.
This will take place during the tennis season, in contrast to past exhibition tournaments, and it might conflict with the Masters 1000 competitions in Shanghai and Paris.
This information was revealed just a few weeks after Rafael Nadal was named an ambassador for the Saudi Arabian Tennis Federation. It was said that the event was originally scheduled to take place following the Australian Open, but it was postponed because of the Spaniard’s injury issues.
Following the confirmation of the exhibition match, Rafael Nadal stated, “I am really happy to play for the first time in Riyadh, after some other tennis players have done so.”
All six of the players engaged made this unique decision, which was probably inspired by the substantial appearance fees that were offered to them. With Saudi Arabia being tipped to host the WTA Finals, it seemed all but inevitable that tennis would continue to spread throughout the country. However, it seems a bit awkward that it would coincide with some significant season-ending competitions in October. Regarding Rafael Nadal, this is also a very interesting move, as it implies that he plans to continue competing in the later part of 2024, even if many believe he may retire at the Olympics or Roland Garros.
