Bobby Webster was involved in a car accident
Bobby Webster, general manager of the Raptors, was involved in an accident.
Masai Ujiri, the team president, is “frustrated” with the organization, according to an NBA general manager who spoke with Steve Bulpett of Heavy, and he may end up being courted by the Washington Wizards.
“Masai is quite irritated,” the general manager stated. He’s also annoyed with Fred VanVleet since he hasn’t made it clear that he intends to stay. I believe he is very depressed about that circumstance. Perhaps it’s because everything is still so new, but they have a lot of work to do there. Nobody was shocked to learn that Nick had moved on.
“I’m not sure what their plans are, but it seems like Washington is pursuing Masai once more.”
Ujiri has spent the last ten years with the Raptors, where he was a key member of the team that won the team’s first NBA title in 2019. Over the last three seasons, Toronto has been in a bit of a rut; the team has missed the playoffs twice and was eliminated in the first round of the 2022 playoffs.
Ujiri, or whoever ends up taking his place, will have to make important decisions that will affect the Raptors going forward. This summer, Fred VanVleet (player option) will become a free agent, and there is a good chance the team will have to decide whether to re-sign him to a big contract or let him depart and start over. After the 2023–24 season, Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby will be free agents, making them desirable trade pieces.
The Wizards later refuted reports that they were interested in Ujiri in 2019 following the Raptors’ victory.
Ted Leonsis, CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, issued a statement at the time, saying, “Any allegations that we have interest in Masai Ujiri as a candidate are simply not true, and we have never planned in any manner to ask for permission to speak to him during our process.”
Tommy Sheppard, who was let go in April after four seasons, was hired by Washington.
