The Detroit Lions are long overdue for an international game, as team president Rod Wood has stated. The team hasn’t played one since 2015. Two of the host clubs for the 2024 international games—the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings—are on the Lions’ trip schedule, according to the league’s March announcement.
TheFL published the whole schedule of overseas games for the 2024 season on Wednesday morning, ahead of the full schedule being released on Wednesday night. In Brazil, the first week was previously announced.
Notably, this season will see an international game for each of the three division rivals of the Lions. With the Packers getting an extra day or two before Week 2 and the Bears and Vikings expected to have their bye weeks following their games in London, it is unlikely to have much of an influence on short rest. However, traveling and changing time zones in the middle of a season can happen. In addition, the Bears and Vikings will lose their international game at home.
It now seems inevitable that the Lions will play an international match in 2025. They appear to be prepared to play there after receiving marketing rights for four nations, including Germany, earlier this summer.
