Sean Payton, the head coach of the Broncos, has decided to quit the team.
Although many saw Russell Wilson’s two-week suspension as a sign of an impending divorce, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton stated on Tuesday that Wilson’s future is still up in the air and that no decision has been made.
“Look, I think it’s too early at all because there are so many factors that go into a choice relating to the quarterback, which is obviously critical when we come back and we begin this process of looking at our roster and where we choose,” Payton stated. “Look, I don’t believe it’s going to be a long, drawn-out process, but it hasn’t been decided relative to what our goals are,” I said to Russ during our 30-minute conversation yesterday. But he will undoubtedly be the first to know as soon as we find out anything.”
Wilson was benched by the Broncos for the last two weeks, in part to prevent any financial ramifications that would have resulted from a serious injury to the quarterback. In March 2025, Wilson’s $37 million injury guarantee becomes completely guaranteed. The Broncos will let Wilson go in the upcoming months if they wish to avoid that assurance.
