Although many saw Russell Wilson’s two-week suspension as a sign of impending divorce, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton stated on Tuesday that Wilson’s future is still up in the air and that no decision has been made.
“Look, I think it’s too early at all because there are so many factors that go into a choice relating to the quarterback, which is obviously critical, when we get back and we begin this process of looking at our roster, where we select,” Payton stated. “Hey, I don’t believe it’s going to be a long, drawn-out process, but it hasn’t been decided relative to what our goals are,” I informed Russ during our 30-minute conversation yesterday. But he would undoubtedly be the first to know as soon as we found out something.”
Wilson was benched by the Broncos for the final two weeks, in part to prevent any financial ramifications that would have resulted from a serious injury to the quarterback. In March of 2025, Wilson’s $37 million injury guarantee becomes completely guaranteed. The Broncos will let Wilson go in the upcoming months if they wish to avoid that assurance.
