NFL Executives and Coaches Respond to the Prospect of a Colts Head Coach
GettyOn November 7, the Indianapolis Colts fired head coach Frank Reich and installed ESPN pundit Jeff Saturday in his place.
When the Indianapolis Colts announced that they were firing Frank Reich and appointing TV analyst Jeff Saturday as the team’s temporary head coach, the media had a day to respond. Executives and coaches in the NFL are changing positions more frequently.
They share the same level of surprise and “bewilderment” as the reporters covering the Colts in general.
After Indianapolis was named the team’s interim head coach on Saturday, a league source wrote senior writer Matt Lombardo, saying, “It’s an incredibly clever move to [crap] on an entire industry of coaches.having multiple coaches within your company. Choosing a man who has never coached at any level was a smart move.
Colts Select Saturday against Other Staff Candidates Who Qualify
Saturday began his first press conference by complimenting the Colts coaching staff. That was a wise move for a man who had convinced himself he had to win over the Indianapolis locker room.
Even yet, it’s puzzling why Colts owner Jim Irsay appointed a TV analyst as the team’s interim head coach, given how excellent their coaching staff is.
Gus Bradley and John Fox, two former head coaches, work for Indianapolis. Bradley has one of the lowest winning percentages of any head coach in NFL history, even though Fox won 133 games while coaching the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and Chicago Bears.
If Bradley hadn’t been calling defense plays, he probably wouldn’t have been the ideal candidate for the promotion. There was no need to intervene because his unit was operating effectively.
However, Fox could have taken over as the team’s interim head coach while holding the position of senior defensive assistant.
Then we might have Bubba Ventrone, the coordinator of special teams, to ourselves. In the NFL, Ventrone is regarded as a rising coach, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic.
Two other intriguing contenders were quarterback coach Scott Milanovich and running back coach Scottie Montgomery. From 2016 to 2018, Montgomery was in charge of East Carolina, and Milanovich led the CFL for five seasons.
When the Colts conduct a more extensive hiring process for the head coach after the season, it might be detrimental to leave the capable coaches on staff unmonitored. It doesn’t matter how brilliantly the Colts use this opportunity on Saturday; they still have to follow the Rooney Rule and carry out that deeper search.
Will that search be affected by hiring on Saturday? Howe gave a loud “yeah” in response.
But, it’s possible that candidates will have different opinions on how stable the position is when the Colts look to hire a new head coach in the upcoming months. “The next round of interviews will be aware that something similar may happen again if Saturday is the hand-picked replacement by ownership,” said a former head coach of the NFL. This could be rather pertinent. “Those who have previously held head coaching roles tend to be pickier about their next job offers since they understand that this is likely their only opportunity.”
“Two executives from the opposing teams and one assistant coach called the events on Monday ‘wild.'”
The majority of executives surveyed by The Athletic felt that understanding the Colts’ situation was difficult.
