Sheldon Keefe, Maple Leafs head coach, just signed his resignation papers after it was confirmed that…
Upon accepting accountability for Toronto’s past playoff disappointments, Sheldon Keefe quickly made an impression on newly appointed Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving.
Keefe agreed to a two-year contract extension on Wednesday, meaning he will lead the Maple Leafs through at least 2025. Treliving claimed that Keefe’s capacity for team leadership made the new arrangement feasible.
Upon joining the team on May 31, Treliving said, “Almost two weeks after Toronto’s second-round playoff exit, Sheldon was extraordinarily candid, honest, and accountable for what’s going on here.” “I think it’s important to start with yourself and evaluate the job that you’ve done, which Sheldon has done.
“I think about what he did throughout the
of the summer in terms of engaging with our players, getting their feedback on particular issues, and identifying areas that need work.
After signing a contract with the Maple Leafs, Matthews claims he will only focus on winning hockey.
The 42-year-old Keefe was named the Maple Leafs’ head coach on November 20, 2019. Mike Babcock, who was fired after the team concluded the season with a 9-10-4 record, was replaced by him. Since then, Keefe has accumulated a regular-season record of 166-71-30 and has made it to the postseason every year.
However, Toronto hasn’t been able to sustain its success into the postseason thus far.
The Maple Leafs won their first postseason series since 2004, when they defeated Tampa Bay in six games in the opening round of the 2022–23 playoffs. But the eighth-seeded Florida Panthers upset Toronto in the next round.
“It’s realistic to conclude that things will remain as they are, given this team’s regular-season performance,” Treliving said in a media video conference. “But Keefe is exploring and pushing the envelope on how we can do better.”
