Stephen Vogt, manager of the Cleveland Guardians, just announced his departure due to…
The Cleveland Guardians replaced longstanding manager Terry Francona without much delay. On Monday, the team selected Stephen Vogt, a former catcher, to be its next manager.
Vogt, 39, hasn’t been absent much during the match. He was the Seattle Mariners’ quality control and bullpen coach during the 2023 MLB season. Vogt spent ten seasons playing in the main leagues before that. He played for the Oakland Athletics for the duration of his playing career, making two All-Star teams with the team.
Despite Vogt’s lack of managerial experience, the Guardians are comfortable with him, according to MLB.com, which was reported by Chris Antonetti, head of baseball operations for the franchise.
“Stephen has given careful attention to the kind of manager and leader he wants to be. He is the perfect candidate to lead our club going forward because of his genuine concern for people, his capacity to form strong connections with those around him, and his curiosity and open-mindedness. We are thrilled to be working with Stephen as a partner.
Vogt will take over for the Guardians, who finished the 2023 MLB season with a 76-86 record. The Guardians, who had won the American League Central in 2022, were disappointed by the outcome.
By 2024, the Guardians’ roster will still be full of talented players. One of baseball’s best players, José Ramirez, is still there, and Tanner Bibee seems like a great young addition to the rotation.
In recent years, one of baseball’s weaker divisions has been the AL Central. If Vogt turns out to be a wise acquisition and the appropriate players recover, the Guardians might challenge for an AL Central championship in 2024, barring a significant shift in mindset from the other clubs in the division.
