Bruce Douglas Bochy retires as head coach of Texas.
HoustonDusty Baker, sporting his 2022 World Series title ring and his trademark smile, looked forward to the next phase of his incredible baseball career while reminiscing about his four years in Houston. Despite the fact that he is 74 years old and believes he still has plenty to offer the game and society, his more than 50-year Major League career is coming to an end.
Baker announced his retirement at Minute Maid Park on Thursday. Baker came out of retirement in 2020 and guided the Astros to two World Series appearances, including his first manager title in ’22. He stated that although he plans to be active in the game, he will be going back to his native California to be with his family, which includes two grandchildren.
At the press appearance, Baker, who was accompanied by his wife, Melissa, stated that it was likely the fastest four years of his life. But when you succeed, that’s what occurs. I wish them success because they were winning when I arrived and continued to win while I was here.
With 2,183 regular-season wins, the seventh-highest in history, on his resume, Baker ends his 26-year tenure as one of the most accomplished managers in history. He led teams to pennants in both leagues (the National League’s Giants in 2002 and the American League’s Astros in 2021–2022) and won division titles with five different clubs.
Baker remarked, “I hope it’s in better shape now than when I got here; they were in great shape then.” I express my gratitude to Jim Crane for believing in me.
