LAS VEGAS: The first six seasons of Alex Whittingham’s tenure as an NFL assistant coach have gone rather smoothly.
That may be going too far.
Whittingham, a former linebacker for Utah and the son of longtime Utes coach Kyle Whittingham, is going after his third Super Bowl ring with Kansas City when the Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 30, 2024 (4:30 p.m. MST, CBS).
“I was clueless and could not have imagined that the ride we’ve had would be this enjoyable. Regarding his decision to join a team that would be participating in its fourth Super Bowl in the previous five years, Alex Whittingham stated that the time was just ideal.
Whittingham joined the Chiefs in 2018 after serving as a defensive assistant for a year. He then spent the next five years in Kansas City as a defensive quality control coach, which he described as “a lot of the same work but a different title.”
Whittingham remarked to the Deseret News on Wednesday, “No, it’s been, gosh, I mean, you said it, like the timing of getting here and being on this run that we’ve been on.”
As I’m in my sixth year, I’m still sort of settling in and attempting to understand this whole coaching thing. Few coaches are able to learn and develop as coaches while still winning championships and enjoying other success throughout their early careers. For that, I’m incredibly grateful, and I realize how lucky I am.

Although there are more BYU alumni connected to the Kansas City Chiefs than Whittingham, he doesn’t mind because they are all now teammates.
Andy Reid, head coach, and assistant running BYU alumni include practice squad tight end Matt Bushman and g-backs coach Porter Ellett.
The sixth-year Kansas City assistant said, “It’s fun because once you get to this level, it’s like we’re all part of the (Chiefs) Kingdom.”
In college, Whittingham faced off against Bushman.
“Now that we’re on the same team and I work with him on the offensive scout team, he’s been great. I remember him being a pain in the butt when we were in college and playing against him,” Whittingham remarked. “He’s fantastic. I adore Matt, Porter, and the entire BYU team. As you get to know them, they turn out to be fairly normal.
