A former Vikings coach reportedly interviewed for Saints job
Prior to the start of the 2021 season, former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer decided to promote the team’s quarterbacks coach, Klint Kubiak, and make him their new offensive coordinator.
Kubiak was only 34 when he was promoted to be the Vikings’ offensive coordinator, a role he had never held before in his short NFL coaching career.
Despite never calling plays before, Minnesota’s lone season with Kubiak running the offense wasn’t terrible, as the team finished 15th in the league in points per offensive drive, 11th in passing yards per game, 17th in rushing yards per game, and 12th in total yards per game.
Former Minnesota Vikings coach reportedly interviews for New Orleans Saints opening
After the 2021 season, Zimmer and the majority of his coaching staff were fired by the Vikings, including Kubiak.
So, for the last two years, the former Minnesota offensive coordinator has spent his time with two franchises.
Kubiak was the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the Denver Broncos in 2022, and this season, he has been working as the passing game coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers.
According to a recent report, it seems like Kubiak could potentially be switching teams again this year as New Orleans. Football’s Nick Underhill recently revealed that the former Vikings coach has interviewed with the New Orleans Saints for their current offensive coordinator vacancy.
After the 2023 season, the Saints moved on from Pete Carmichael as their offensive coordinator, a role he has had with the team since 2009.
So far, New Orleans has interviewed five candidates for their current offensive coordinator opening, including Kubiak.
In addition to the former Minnesota assistant coach, the Saints have also interviewed 49ers quarterbacks coach Brian Griese, Los Angeles Rams quarterback coach and pass game coordinator Zac Robinson, and former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Shan Waldron (who has already been hired by the Chicago Bears to be their new offensive coordinator).
No decision has been made yet about the vacancy as New Orleans attempts to find someone to be their offensive coordinator for the first time in over a decade.
