Liam Coen has agreed to terms to become the next offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the organization announced on Saturday.

After interviewing all of the contenders early on Friday morning, Coen was declared the front-runner by the Bucs. However, at the time, sources claimed that Coen was still under contract to serve as the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach; thus, details were still being worked out with the University of Kentucky.

Neither the terms of the agreement nor the necessary arrangements with Kentucky were immediately revealed.

Because Coen had experience working under Sean McVay, the Bucs found him to be an appealing candidate. He had been an assistant wide receivers coach for the Los Angeles Rams from 2018 to 2019, an assistant quarterbacks coach in 2020, an offensive coordinator in 2022, and an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Kentucky in 2021 and 2023.

The offense Shane Waldron’s Seattle Seahawks operated in 2023 was the model for the Buccaneers’ 2023 offense, which was led by the now-departed offensive coordinator Dave Canales. For four seasons, Waldron collaborated with McVay before introducing his approach to Seattle. The Buccaneers thought it best to maintain the offense as similar to last year’s as feasible for continuity, having spent the previous season learning a new offense under Canales.

The Buccaneers could be able to re-sign quarterback Baker Mayfield as a result of Coen’s arrival in Tampa, as the two collaborated in Los Angeles in 2022. Given that Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans showed a high level of satisfaction with the system last year, it might also aid in Evans’ re-signing. Both expressed a desire to return to Tampa Bay if a financial arrangement could be made, and the Buccaneers would be thrilled to have them both back.
