The Tennessee Titans have done a terrible job of making the most of their incredible victory.
The Tennessee Titans’ season has been marred by missed chances, and their final standing in the AFC South will be the fact that they finished last for the first time since 2015.
For the second straight week, the Tennessee Titans suffered a three-point loss at home at own stadium on Sunday. That kind of close game was one that the Titans would typically win in the past, but this fan base shouldn’t have any faith that this club can win close games going forward.
The team lost 19–16 to the rival Houston Texans last week in overtime. This past weekend, a two-yard touchdown run by Derrick Henry and a Nick Folk field goal with 3:21 remaining gave Mike Vrabel’s team—which has Ryan Tannehill at quarterback—a 17–13 lead over the Seattle Seahawks.
Geno Smith and the Seattle offence marched 75 yards in 14 plays, but it wouldn’t last long. With 57 seconds left in the drive, backup tight end Colby Parkinson caught a five-yard touchdown pass. The team’s record was reduced to 5-10 after the 20-17 loss. The franchise has seen back-to-back seasons with double-digit losses for the first time since 2014 and 2015.
For the Titans, it has been an eventful year full of close calls, most of which have ended in less than spectacular fashion. Tennessee is 4-6 overall and has lost 10 of its 15 games by seven points or fewer under Vrabel’s coaching.
The Titans have already dropped an overtime decision to Houston, upset the Dolphins 28-27, lost by three points in overtime to the Colts, and currently trail the Seahawks by three points. The team has played three overtime games in total in 2023. Back in Week 2 at Nashville, they defeated the Los Angeles Chargers, 27-24.
Let’s go back to the recent defeats by Seattle and Houston. These came after Miami’s thrilling comeback win on Monday night. With three home games left in the last four weeks, the team’s record was up to 5-8 after that win, and there was still hope for a winning season. Actually, given how the AFC South is developing, a division victory would not have seemed so unlikely if this squad had simply avoided making bad decisions and mental mistakes on the pitch.
Rather, the offence of the club vanished, scoring a mere 33 points overall with just three touchdowns. The Texans sacked quarterback Will Levis seven times, while the Seahawks sacked quarterback Ryan Tannehill six times.
