Breaking News: According to a report, Bill Belichick left the Cowboys for “media” reasons.
Despite Mike Florioback’s miserable 1-3 playoff record in Dallas and the team’s heartbreaking loss to the Packers in the postseason opener, the Dallas Cowboys and club owner Jerry Jones decided this week to crush the hopes of the team’s fans all over the world by employing him. Jones might not have made the ultimate choice, though. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Cowboys tried to find out if renowned coach Bill Belichick would be interested in take over in Dallas, but he declined.
Seems like Belichick is getting closer to moving to Atlanta. The Eagles and Cowboys were reportedly prevented from signing Belichick, which led to the Eagles keeping Nick Sirianni and the Cowboys keeping McCarthy. Surprisingly, Florio cites Belichick’s wish to avoid large media markets as one of the causes.
This week, Florio reported, “A league source says Belichick is done with ‘big-market media,’ thus he’s more likely to go to Atlanta than Dallas or Philadelphia.”
In some league circles, there’s a belief that the Cowboys and Eagles, who both expressed interest in Belichick, decided to stick with their current head coaches when Belichick turned down their approaches.
Falcons are told by Bill Belichick: “We’re Coming Together.”
According to a number of sources, the Falcons are almost certain to choose Belichick to be their next head coach. It would be an interesting game between a coach who has five Super Bowl victories and is just 26 wins away from Don Shula’s all-time NFL coaches record of 328 victories against a team that has never won a Super Bowl and hasn’t finished above.500 since 2017.
Belichick has been interviewed twice by Falcons owner Arthur Blank, who has also recently expressed interest in the team’s personnel.
Following the Cowboys’ loss to the Packers, a lot of speculation about their possible involvement in a deal for Belichick surfaced. Amid the heartbreaking loss, SI.com insider Albert Breer tweeted, “Bill Belichick has, discreetly in recent years, via doing football business and attending owners meetings, formed a very solid friendship with both Jerry and Stephen Jones.” It looks like this may get extremely interesting.
Cowboys Are unable to let go of Michael McCarthy
It goes without saying that there was never much excitement about Belichick and the Cowboys, or any other potential head coach for that matter. After two days of reflection, the Cowboys brought McCarthy back and reintroduced him during a press conference on Wednesday.
This week, Florio reported, “A league source says Belichick is done with ‘big-market media,’ thus he’s more likely to go to Atlanta than Dallas or Philadelphia.”
