Throughout the season, the Los Angeles Lakers have battled with consistency; while at times they have appeared to be among the league’s best teams, at other times they have suggested that they may not make it to the postseason.
Sometimes it even holds true during a game; the recent setback against the Sacramento Kings serves as an excellent illustration. In the first quarter, the Lakers led by as many as 19 points after getting out to a quick start. From then on, however, the Kings fully turned the tables, and before the Lakers realized it, they were truly down 20 and would ultimately lose.
It is the coach’s responsibility to try to halt those extended runs and get his team back on course by using timeouts. However, there are other instances of coaches who would rather let their team work things out on the floor without the usage of timeouts in that situation. Phil Jackson, the former coach of the Lakers, is a prime illustration of it.
Darvin Ham, the head coach of the Lakers currently in charge, has occasionally fit into both categories and talked about his approach to using timeouts.
“I strive to have the utmost faith in my guys,” Ham remarked. Sometimes it depends on how a team is running against us. It seems sense to try to give your squad time to straighten things out if we’re making reckless turnovers or if the problem is entirely self-inflicted. We are attempting to regroup when they are scorching at times and the opposition is shooting wildly from beyond the 3-point line or is simply losing badly. Similar to the OKC game, they attacked us right away, but we supported our men and managed to resolve the situation.
Therefore, there isn’t always a single right response. I believe you have certain coaches that are immediately on it when a team scores two baskets in a row. However, in my opinion, you should trust your men and give them another chance, given the circumstances.
The Lakers have given up a lot of huge runs this season, thus Ham’s use of timeouts has come under fire.
As beneficial as it is for a coach to have faith in his players, there are instances when it might backfire. Even if Ham is familiar with his team’s movements, there have undoubtedly been instances in which the Lakers would have benefited from a shorter timeout to break a run or in which the coach of the opposition would have taken a short timeout to halt L.A.’s run.
Though Ham is just in his second season as head coach, he is undoubtedly still picking things up as he goes along. But with every game from now on being crucial, let’s hope Ham and the Lakers can get into a rhythm and build a winning run to qualify for the postseason.
