Dak Prescott finished the 2023 NFL regular season ranked among the top five in a number of important passing metrics. Against the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs, he had 4,516 yards (3rd), 36 touchdowns (1st), 9 interceptions, and a QB rating of 72.5 (2nd) going into the game.
Although Kellen Moore is considered as one of the young, talented offensive minds of the future, some people rolled their eyes when Jerry Jones and company decided to fire him at the end of the previous season. However, after play calling was taken over by head coach Mike McCarthy, the Dallas Cowboys offense looked elite for the majority of the season.
Ultimately, Prescott and CeeDee Lamb developed a great rapport and became perhaps the best quarterback/wide receiver combination in the league.
The Dallas Cowboys featured a defense that concluded the season rated fifth in the NFL, which went along with an explosive offense led by Dak Prescott that averaged 389 yards and 30 points per game and finished with 77 touchdowns in the regular season.
Following yet another heartbreaking early playoff defeat, the Dallas brass went into the offseason with more questions than answers.
Although it is anticipated that Jerry Jones and company would hold onto Prescott through as least 2024, it is evident the team is considering all of its options in light of the Cowboys’ announcement that they will not be offering their franchise quarterback a contract extension. Rather, Jones stated that a mutual agreement exists for Prescott to play in the last year of his contract. This was an odd and surprising decision for a team that wanted to clear cost space in order to bring in new players.
The future of Prescott is uncertain, and the team hasn’t made many moves in free agency thus far. DallasCowboys.com’s Patrik Walker suggested Ryan Tannehill, a former quarterback for the Tennessee Titans, as a possible replacement for the quarterback at The Star.
In light of Prescott’s most recent developments, it would be prudent to examine this notion as the former Pro Bowler is still a free agent. In an article titled “Open Market: Intriguing Free Agent QBs for Cowboys,” published on February 13, 2024, Walker provided the following details regarding Tannehill.
Tanehill will turn 36 this season, and Walker stated, “I do believe his days as a starter are now behind him.” At first sight, Walker thought this one would be a bit of a reach. But it doesn’t mean he can’t be a valuable backup, which is why he’s at the top of my list.
In terms of being a possible upgrade over Rush, Tannehill may be worth a look. He also serves as insurance should Lance not develop as the Dallas Cowboys hope when they step up their development of a quarterbacking staff. There may be anything to think about because I find this intriguing at all.
