Following the event, the tennis star posted on social media to reassure fans that he was “fine.”
During the Italian Open autograph signing on Friday, May 10, Novak Djokovic unintentionally struck his head on a metal water bottle. He said he was “fine.”
A video that was shared on social media shows Djokovic, the top tennis player in the world, signing a cap and a piece of paper for the yelling fans when a metal water bottle landed on his head following his victory in the second round of the Open.
The water bottle fell out of Djokovic’s backpack and struck his head as the fan leaned over the railing to ask him to autograph his notebook.
Djokovic took a shot, put both hands on his head, and rolled up on the ground, hiding behind a security guard. After being assisted into the tunnel, he was seen in the locker room and given medical assistance.
“I appreciate your letters of concern. I’m alright, resting in the motel with an ice pack. This was an accident. After the match, Djokovic wrote on Friday, “See you all on Sunday.”
According to tournament officials, Djokovic suffered a bump on his head and was examined out by physicians; he did not attend the post-match news conference, as reported by the Associated Press. While there was considerable blood on his head, Alessandro Catapano, a spokesman for the Italian Tennis Federation, said that stitches were not necessary.
The Italian Open stated that Djokovic “underwent appropriate medication and has already left the Foro Italico to return to his hotel; his condition is not a cause for concern” in a post on X, confirming that the water bottle drop was an accident.
The incident happened shortly after Djokovic’s 6-3, 6-1 victory over Corentin Moutet, a French opponent.
Djokovic will play Alejandro Tabilo of Chile on Sunday.
