Madrid — Two days later, Real Madrid released a statement claiming that they had lodged a complaint against the referee of their encounter at Osasuna on March 16 for failing to mention racist epithets used at their forward, Vinicius Jr.
The 23-year-old Brazilian international has experienced racist taunts multiple times in Spain. He scored twice as La Liga leaders Real Madrid defeated them 4-2 at the El Sadar Stadium.
Real stated, “Our club has lodged a complaint against the match referee, Juan Martinez Munuera, with the Disciplinary Committee of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).”
“Our players insisted on pointing out the taunts and vexatious yells aimed against our player Vinicius Jr. at the exact moment when they were occurring, but the referee voluntarily and deliberately chose not to show them.”
Real has also added more details to the complaint they made on March 15 about hate and discrimination offenses with the state prosecutor’s office. The accusation stemmed from claims that the Brazil forward was the target of racist chants from Atletico Madrid and Barcelona supporters.
“Real Madrid demands that the required steps be taken, once and for all, to eradicate the brutality that our player Vinicius Junior has been suffering from, and once again condemns these violent attacks of racism, discrimination, and hatred.”
The Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) of the RFEF has been contacted by Reuters for comment.
