Rotational wide receiver parted ways with Tampa Bay Buccaneers ahead of required minicamp; report: 2024 offseason

    SHARE

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers dismissed an injured wide receiver at OTAs on  today, ahead of their 2024 campaign.

It goes without saying that the NFL, a multibillion dollar business, is a ruthless enterprise. Rebuilding the roster puts non-star players’ employment at jeopardy, even while parity in America’s premier sports league is at an all-time high (except from the Kansas City Chiefs). After  .

After their second window of OTAs concluded, the Buccaneers dismissed wide receiver Even Thompkins due to injury, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson. The day before, Tampa Bay signed former Washington wide receiver Jaleen McMillan, who was selected in the third round of the NFL draft last month. Three undrafted wide receivers were added, making injured wide receiver Thompkins an unavailability on the roster for the required minicamp that begins next month.

Deven Thompkins, WR with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was let go by the team.Despite a 1,704-year receiving season, Utah State great Deven Thompkins did not have his name called in the 2022 NFL selection. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Thompkins as an undrafted free agent. Thompkins was dismissed by the NFC South team prior to the regular season, but in Week 13, the Utah State product was promoted off the practice squad….He returned 12 kickoffs for 12 yards and five catches for 32 yards to cap off his rookie season. During the postseason, he served as the team’s kick returner as well.

Thompkins, who caught 17 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown in 17 games last year, was far more involved in the action. In early October, he had his best performance of the year against the New Orleans Saints, catching four catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. Once more, as a returner, he contributed significantly to special teams performance. Throughout the playoffs, Thompkins returned three kickoffs and one punt while catching one pass.

    Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Positional Stats

Wideout Deven Thompkins, who was recently released, placed sixth on the squad in terms of receptions in 2023. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will now need to replace his output and role as a rotational pass-catcher after he was released on Friday. Trey Palmer, Chris Godwin, and Mike Evans will be back in the fall, but Jalen McMillan, a third-round draft pick, will be a big part of the team in 2024. Tanner Knue, Latreal Jones, and Kameron Johnson were signed by the Bucs as undrafted free agents in the meantime.. Knue played four years for the Eastern Michigan Eagles and had a strong collegiate career, catching 154 passes for 1,866 yards.

Ryan Miller, Cephus Johnson III, Raleigh Webb, and Kim Jarrett are also present for Tampa Bay in the receiving room. Jarrett is the only pass-catcher to record a reception in an NFL regular season game out of all the former undrafted free agents signed in the previous two years.
