Buffalo Bills took care of the defensive line on Thursday when they announced the signing of two veterans.
Austin Johnson, a former Tennessee Titan, has joined the Buffalo Bills to strengthen their defensive line. The versatile lineman, whose ability to play several spots along the defensive front, was highlighted by the organization when they announced his signing to a one-year contract.
Johnson, whom the Titans selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, adds significant experience to the Bills’ roster. Having accumulated eight career sacks, he has proven to be a valuable asset on the inside and outside of the defensive line. Excited by Johnson’s potential, Bills general manager Brandon Beane compared it to defensive tackle DaQuan Jones’s breakout season in Buffalo, his former colleague at Penn State.
Beane highlighted Johnson’s visit to the squad and highlighted his integrity and dedication to a winning culture, suggesting that Jones was involved in promoting the Bills’ culture. Johnson gives the Bills’ defensive rotation vital depth, even though he might not immediately assume a starting position.
Johnson’s flexibility and on-field skills were highlighted during his most recent stay with the Los Angeles Chargers during the 2022–2023 seasons. Pro Football Focus gave Johnson a low grade for the 2023 campaign, but his effect went beyond the numbers; he tallied 16 tackles and regularly put pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Johnson, who is 29 years old and has started 55 games in his NFL career, brings a plethora of experience to the table. 241 tackles, eight sacks, 17 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles are also part of his career stats. Although Johnson would not be expected to start for the Bills, his versatility gives the team important insurance as they approach the 2024 season.
Austin Johnson gives the Bills’ defensive line more depth and versatility, which will help them compete at the highest level in the upcoming season as they continue to strengthen their squad in an effort to contend for a title.
