Buccaneers assistant expected to be hired by Carolina Panthers as offensive coordinator
One could have anticipated a knock-on effect with the announcement that Dave Canales would be joining the Carolina Panthers as head coach. The Buccaneers’ coaching staff will change going forward, but additional positions may need to be filled soon.
It should come as no surprise that the Panthers asked to speak with Buccaneers WRs coach Brad Idzik, as reported by JC Allen on BucsGameday on Friday. Canales is currently playing the lead role following his departure from Tampa.
According to a Sunday report from Ian Rapoport, the Panthers “likely go” with Idzik to fill the position of offensive coordinator. This would not be shocking because Canales, who will likely lead the franchise, would gain more experience.

Canales and Idzik have collaborated for five years. Before putting together a standout 2023 season with the Buccaneers, they worked as assistant coaches for four years with the Seattle Seahawks. It goes without saying that Canales’ decision to take on a larger position with a new team has made it easier for Idzik to advance and secure a larger new role.
The Buccaneers are also showing interest in Idzik for an internal promotion to take Canales’ place as the team’s new offensive coordinator. The Buccaneers would be forced to give the team a more modernized appearance going ahead if they lost another employee.
Idzik helped Mike Evans cross the 1,000 receiving yard milestone this past season; Evans has never failed to do so in his career. Baker Mayfield benefited from this, since his comeback helped establish Canales as a coaching legend.
Numerous sources state that the Buccaneers are interested in Jerrod Johnson, the quarterback coach of the Houston Texans. He had a part in the comeback that sent their team back into the playoffs under rookie CJ Stroud.
