Departure: Raiders coach Antonio Pierce laments, ‘That one hurt’ on the departure of a star RB to a rival team.
- By applying their franchise tag to former Alabama star running back Josh Jacobs, the Las Vegas Raiders prevented him from becoming a free agent in the previous offseason. However, Jacobs did not sign a long-term deal as a result of the tag; thus, earlier this month, the ball carrier became free agent and joined the Green Bay Packers.
Regarding Jacobs’ exit, Raiders coach Antonio Pierce stated, “Don’t like to see it.” “I made it clear that you are a Raider in your core, the beating heart. But it’s a business, as everyone knows. You often hear the saying “Money talks, BS walks,” but it’s real. I hope the best for him; he had to act in his family’s best interests.
However, that one hurt.
The guaranteed portion of Jacobs’ contract, worth $48 million over four years, included a $12.5 million signing bonus for the Green Bay Packers.
Pierce stated, “It’s the nature of the beast,” on Monday while in Orlando, Florida, for the NFL’s annual meeting. Every group handles it. You have to let go and go forward.
The upside is that Zamir White was given a fantastic opportunity the previous year. Alex Mattison and him will be leading candidates now that we’ve seen what he can achieve.
After spending five seasons with the Raiders as a first-round draft pick in 2019, Jacobs’ 5,545 rushing yards are third in franchise history behind Mark van Eeghen’s 5,907 and Marcus Allen’s 8,545 yards. In addition to leading the NFL in rushing yards during the 2022 season, Jacobs also took home the Jim Brown Award as the league’s top rusher.
On 104 carries, White gained 451 yards and one touchdown in the previous campaign. Due to an injury, he started four of the games that Jacobs missed. After Alexander Mattison rushed for 700 yards on 180 runs for the Minnesota Vikings in 2023 without scoring a touchdown, the Raiders added him in free agency.
Jacobs was signed by Las Vegas approximately two weeks prior to the 2023 season’s commencement. Despite missing the last four games of the season due to a quadriceps injury, he still started the first game and finished with 805 running yards and 1,101 yards from scrimmage.
- In 2022, Jacobs finished as the first-team All-Pro running back with 1,653 rushing yards and 2,053 yards from scrimmage.
