    Departure: Sherrone Moore, Wolverines Head Coach, Resigned As Head Coach Due TO.

    • Dusty May has completed his first coaching staff at Michigan, bringing in a former head coach to round out the group of assistants. Mike Boynton Jr., fired by Oklahoma State last month after seven seasons, will serve as an assistant at Michigan under May.

    The move had been in the works for weeks. Boynton confirmed it was official on Friday afternoon. Michigan’s other two on-court assistants for next season will be Akeem Miskdeen, previously an assistant at Georgia, and Saint Mary’s assistant Justin Joyner. May has not formally announced any hires.

    Boynton, 42, has been coaching since his playing career at South Carolina ended in 2004. The Brooklyn native worked at Furman, Coastal Carolina, Wofford, South Carolina, and Stephen F. Austin before moving to Oklahoma State in 2016. He was an assistant for one year under Brad Underwood before getting the head job when Underwood left for Illinois.
    The Cowboys went 119-109 under Boynton, making the NCAA Tournament once, in 2021. That team was led by freshman Cade Cunningham, who later that year was the No. 1 overall NBA draft pick by the Detroit Pistons.

    Boynton is known as an exceptional recruiter. In addition to landing Cunningham, the top prospect in his class, Boynton pulled in the country’s 10th-ranked class last year, a group that included two top-50 recruits. The talent didn’t always equate to wins, however.

    Oklahoma State went just 12-20 this season and finished tied for last in the 14-team Big 12 at 4-14. Boynton was dismissed on March 14. Per 247Sports, Oklahoma State had just one committed prospect for this year’s class: Jeremiah Johnson, a 6-foot-3 point guard from Phoenix ranked No. 162 in the site’s composite.

    The Cowboys had a three-year stretch under Boynton where they ranked 17th, fourth, and 12th in adjusted deficiency per kenpom.com.

    Oklahoma State was ineligible for the postseason in 2022 due to recruiting violations by a former assistant coach.

    Boynton and Underwood, who is still at Illinois, worked together at South Carolina. When Underwood got his first head-coaching job at Stephen F. Austin in 2013, he took Boynton with him, and they moved to Stillwater together a few years later.

    May, hired last month to replace Juwan Howard, said his Michigan staff would be a mix of coaches he worked with at Florida Atlantic and new faces, indicating some of the rest of the staff could be former Owls. May still needs to hire a director of basketball operations and video coordinator, among other positions.
