Ex-Falcons star makes frightening assertion about the Greg Schiano-coached Bucs
Allegation Against Coach Greg Schiano for Instructing Players to Injure Opponents Surfaces
Greg Schiano, the current head coach at Rutgers and former head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has faced criticism in the past regarding his controversial coaching tactics. A new allegation has now emerged that claims Schiano instructed his players to intentionally injure opponents during his time at the Buccaneers. The allegation comes from John Abraham, a former star pass-rusher for the Atlanta Falcons, who played against the Buccaneers during Schiano’s tenure.
Abraham stated during a recent appearance on “The Water Boyz Show” podcast, that during the final game of the Falcons’ 2012 season against the Buccaneers, Donald Penn, a former Buccaneers offensive lineman and Abraham’s friend, warned him to be careful during the game, as he claims Buccaneers players were instructed to intentionally injure their opponents. Abraham claims that Penn said, “Hey man, be careful out here. The coaches told us to hurt you all,” and that they were going to be going extra, doing everything they could to mess with the Falcons after the whistle.
Abraham, who had 133.5 sacks during his career, has been viewed as a Hall of Fame candidate and has made the Pro Bowl five times. His allegations regarding Schiano and the Buccaneers are significant given his reputation, although it remains to be seen whether there is any evidence to support his claims.
Coaches instructing players to injure opponents is a serious offense in professional sports, and the NFL has previously taken a tough stance on such actions. In 2012, Sean Payton, the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, was suspended for the entire season following the infamous Bountygate scandal, where Saints players were reportedly given cash rewards for injuring opposing players.
While Schiano has faced criticism for his tactics and strategy in the past, it is important to note that no evidence has been presented to support Abraham’s claims. The allegation against Schiano is significant and could have major repercussions for him and the Buccaneers organization if proven true, but for now, it remains an unproven claim.
