With 11 missed kicks (five extra points, six field goals), Carlson topped the NFL in that category last season. He missed a critical field goal late in the fourth quarter of Green Bay’s playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, demonstrating his continuing misses.
Some were somewhat aback by the Packers’ decision to stick with Carlson the entire season. After the playoff miss, Carlson received support from his coaches and teammates in Green Bay, but it’s likely that his leash will be cut short in 2024.
According to Matt Schneidman, general manager of the Packers Brian Gutekunst stated, “There’s gonna need to be a curve of becoming better if that’s gonna continue.”
Gutekunst’s remarks a few weeks ago, when he supported holding Carlson as the Packers made a postseason run, have changed significantly.
“I believe that when the season came to a finish and we were on the verge of making the playoffs, we would have given it some thought if a veteran alternative had been available that would have been extremely good. However, it wasn’t. By far, he was the greatest choice, according to Gutekunst.
