Bruce Arians recently explained to Peter King of NBC Sports why he was not able to choose the three-time champion Tom Brady. Arians guided Brady to his final Super Bowl victory with a commanding victory over the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes.
When Mahomes left the Arizona Cardinals to join the Chiefs in 2017, Arians, then 71, was the head coach of the team.In order to select him with the tenth pick, Andy Reid advanced.
The Cardinals were selected with the 13th overall pick, and Arians said that he was taken aback when Kansas City picked up Mahomes straight out of their grasp.
Arians remarked, “I was stunned.” “I assumed that the Chiefs, with Alex Smith as their capable quarterback, were a postseason contender. I believed Pat would come to us.”
Sean Payton likewise desired Mahomes, Patrick
With the eleventh pick, former head coach of the New Orleans Saints Sean Payton also desired to select Mahomes, but he had to settle with Marcus Lattimore.
According to King, Payton stated, “We really like this Patrick Mahomes kid,” inside the Saints’ draft room. “He is the draft’s best steal. Not sure if everyone is aware of that.
Mahomes would have undoubtedly been selected by the Chiefs at the 27th pick, which is where they were before giving draft capital to the Buffalo Bills, so Reid did well by moving up to the 10th pick to draft him.
