The Dallas Cowboys are adding a seasoned defensive lineman back to the roster prior to the start of the free agency period. Carl Davis is a journeyman defensive tackle who may not be well-known to fans, but it looks like he’s returning to Dallas.

On March 6, DallasCowboys.com journalist Patrick Walker was the first to break the news. In addition to playing for a number of clubs, Davis was a member of the Cowboys in 2023.

“Nasty tackle Carl Davis was added to the Cowboys roster just before 2024 NFL free agency. Walker scribbled on X, “All in.” Following a three-game stint in 2023, Carl Davis is back with the Cowboys. He was previously selected by the Ravens in the third round (2015) out of Iowa. He has also played for the Browns, Colts, Jaguars, Patriots, and Seahawks. In his 19 NFL starts, he has 68 total tackles.

After spending three games with the Cowboys in 2023, Carl Davis is back.

He was previously selected by the Ravens in the third round (2015) out of Iowa. He has also played for the Browns, Colts, Jaguars, Patriots, and Seahawks.

During his 19 NFL starts, he has 68 total tackles.

Considering that Davis only played 30 defensive snaps in three appearances in 2023, there isn’t much to say about his season. In the process, he did manage three tackles, but no other noteworthy data were recorded.

The History of Davis Before Dallas

The Baltimore Ravens selected former Iowa Hawkeye Davis in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He did not, however, turn out the way the team had hoped.

In 2016, Davis experienced an ankle injury at the worst possible time following a quiet rookie campaign. The defensive tackle had to establish his value going into 2017 because he missed the entire season.

With fifteen appearances, he was given a fair shot, but he failed to impress.According to Pro Football Reference, he finished 2017 with a total of 19 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 half-sack. Davis was released before the 2018 campaign started.

Three separate teams signed and released Davis during the course of the following two seasons. He played with the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Cleveland Browns, but he was unable to get a permanent position.

That is, until the New England Patriots made a surprise visit. During his three years as a player, Davis experienced his finest season in Foxborough in 2021. Davis recorded 19 tackles and one sack in that season.

The Patriots and Davis broke up in 2022 after 11 tackles and one more sack.

NFL’s Cowboys DE will try out free agency

Dallas appears to be resigning defensive lineman Dorance Armstrong Jr., but they are bringing back Davis.Armstrong will be a free agent when the contract window begins, despite having established a noteworthy role with the Cowboys.

According to Jeremy Fowler, an ESPN writer, Armstrong is “most likely” to sign with another company. Moreover, he thinks the Washington Commanders have a chance to land.

On March 3, Fowler noted, “This important Dallas defensive lineman has plenty of interest.” “He probably won’t be joining the Cowboys again; Dan Quinn, the new Commanders coach, might try to sign him in Washington.”

For Armstrong and the commanders, this move certainly makes sense. But for a man who has amassed 16 sacks in the previous two seasons to start going after Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott would hurt Dallas supporters.
