The experienced forward contributes to fostering a vital culture that has been instrumental in transforming the Stars into a winning team by attending to all the intricate details inherent in the game, and guiding and advising newcomers like Logan Stankoven and Wyatt Johnston.
However, Benn encountered challenges upon his return from the All-Star Break. In February, his scoring rate dropped to 0.59, a stark contrast to his impressive statistics from the 2022–2023 season (78 points, 33 goals, 45 assists) in 82 games. His struggle to boost his scoring totals was evident, with only 8 goals and 21 assists.
Nevertheless, the captain has recently returned to form. Benn has accumulated 14 points (6 goals, 8 assists) in the last 10 games, culminating in his first two-goal performance of the season in a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins last Friday.
Pete DeBoer, the Stars’ coach, praised Benn’s performance, stating, “I thought Benner was great.” “After the first period, we talked about increasing his physical presence in the game, and he went out and did just that in the second period. Demonstrating leadership by engaging players in this aspect of the game was crucial.”
Following a 6-2 loss to New Jersey and a blown 3-0 lead against Florida to kick off a five-game homestand, the Stars bounced back to win their last three games and now boast an 8-2-0 record in their last ten. Dallas is currently tied for first place in the Central Division with Winnipeg and Colorado at 43-19-9 (95 points).
Forward Jason Robertson commented, “The team’s attention to detail and desperation, especially at this time of year, has really increased. Closing out the homestand strong was important because the race to the finish line is on.”
Benn has found success alongside Mason Marchment and Matt Duchene on a line, with Joe Pavelski, Robertson, and Rupper Hintz forming a formidable top line. However, the third line, comprising Benn, Johnston, and Stankoven, has been particularly effective, with Stankoven tallying 11 points (6 goals, 5 assists) in his first 13 NHL games alongside Benn’s 14 points, while Johnston has notched 14 points (8 goals, 6 assists) since Stankoven’s arrival. Additionally, the trio of Sam Steel, Radek Faksa, and Craig Smith has scored seven goals in nine games this month.
Dallas’ depth in forward positions allows for seamless energy transitions between lines, featuring some of the league’s top forwards, which Benn considers a beautiful aspect of their play.
“Executing strong shifts, building momentum, and setting up teammates for success are all crucial elements of hockey,” Benn remarked. “We believe our group is capable of achieving that.”
Benn also acknowledged Stankoven’s contributions, noting that the 21-year-old dynamo’s brilliant play set up one of Benn’s goals.
