This time, Campbell’s humorous remark was made during his Tuesday appearance on “Stoney and Janson with Heather” on 97.1 The Ticket. During the show, he discussed the hilarious advice he provides his family before Lions games.
“I advise my family to put on diapers before playing some of these games,” Campbell remarked. “I’ll warn them and tell them to put on their shoes and get ready to roll.”
Naturally, Campbell is talking about his aggressive play-calling style, which his family and Lions supporters witnessed firsthand during Sunday’s 41-38 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Campbell went for it five times on fourth down in that game—on three different drives, scoring on two of them—and he did so three times on a single drive that began in the first quarter and continued into the second.
Riley Patterson’s game-winning 41-yard field goal at the end of Detroit’s drive was one of the team’s five conversion attempts. Detroit converted four of those attempts. With 1:47 remaining in regulation, on fourth-and-2 from the Chargers 26-yard line, Campbell called a wild throw play that resulted in rookie tight end Sam LaPorta being hit by quarterback Jared Goff for a six-yard gain, putting the Lions in the red zone and forcing the Chargers to use their last timeout.
After three kneel-downs, Patterson kicked his 13th field goal of the season, putting the Lions up 7-2 and 1.5 games ahead of the NFC North.
Although many Lions fans, including his family, were probably alarmed by Campbell’s aggressiveness on Sunday, it was all part of a well-executed game plan.
“I felt we had to be aggressive in that game, and I thought our offensive matchup was fantastic,” Campbell remarked. “I had no doubt that our guys would reply. It certainly seemed the correct thing to do at the time.
