Howie Roseman argues for the Eagles’ philosophy and roster-building strategy at linebacker
The Eagles develop via the trenches, opting to forego using premium resources at linebacker in favor of stockpiling skill at defensive tackle and top pass rushers.
Roseman used standard general manager rhetoric to explain his lack of urgency in addressing adequate depth at the linebacker position during his end-of-season press conference.
According to Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, “I feel like we’ve had a long history of success here, developing the team in a certain manner.” Roseman spoke on Wednesday. Additionally, I believe that there may be some misconceptions that say it doesn’t matter who plays linebacker. Once more, the linebacker performance for our two Super Bowl teams in the previous six years was excellent.
During the offseason, Roseman signed Kyzir White to a cooperative contract and hit on undrafted free agent T.J. Edwards. Both players were instrumental in leading Philadelphia to the Super Bowl.
Roseman then refused to pay both players, letting White and Edwards go free and placing his bets on 2022 third-round pick Nakobe Dean, who would develop into a tackling machine and field general in his second season.
The Eagles also added former Michigan State linebacker Ben VanSumeren following the draft and former Bears linebacker Nicholas Morrow in free agency in addition to Dean.
On August 6, during training camp, Zach Cunningham and Myles Jack were added by Roseman.
We examine the linebacker prospects for the Eagles as the NFL offseason gets underway in March.
2024 roster outlook
It’s the same story for the Eagles heading into 2024.
Shaquille Leonard, Cunningham, and Morrow will all be unrestricted free agents. Even though Dean will be recovering from foot surgery, VanSumeren and Dean will be the only linebackers with contracts through 2024.
