Safety coach and special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh is expected to leave Ann Arbor to join his father Jim in Los Angeles with the Chargers, according to multiple sources.

Although Jay’s decision to follow Jim to Los Angeles and then return to the NFL is not entirely surprising, it is nevertheless a loss because Jay spent a good nine seasons with Michigan. Harbaugh coached tight ends and running backs during his time at Michigan. He also completed his fourth season as special teams coordinator and his second season as safety coach.

He’s always been regarded as a reliable recruiter with the flexibility to meet needs wherever they may arise.

Jay Harbaugh’s retirement has left Sherrone Moore, the new head coach, to deal with the loss of defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert, and possibly more players. During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, he provided a broad schedule for hiring additional staff.
