Cowboys: Lieutenant Tyron Smith Talks About a Potential Comeback.
Todd Archer of ESPN reports that Smith has expressed a strong desire to play for a 14th season. He is now heading into free agency because the team is letting his eight-year, $97.6 million deal expire, but both parties will keep talking about the possibility of a return. Jerry Jones, the team’s owner, president, and general manager, addressed the media after today’s meetings, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic.
We’ll enter in the proper manner, talk about his business, and come to a mutually beneficial agreement. His career has been amazing. Jones remarked, “He’s a Hall of Fame player.””It’s impossible to express how confident I felt about our relationship heading into the playoffs, his state of health, and his location. We were just where you wanted to be, in my opinion. And I think coach Mike McCarthy deserves a lot of credit for pushing it to the point where Tyron was ready for the playoffs.
Smith has missed 49 of the 131 regular-season games that he could have played since 2015. Smith missed 14 regular-season games in 2020 and 13 in 2022, respectively, in two of the previous four years. The squad is usually content with whatever he can offer. Smith hasn’t played in more than 13 games over that time, but he has still been selected to five Pro Bowls and been named an All-Pro twice, most recently this season.
Nevertheless, as Smith ages, the Cowboys are prepared to let him take an occasional regular-season vacation if it means he’ll be ready for the team’s most crucial games toward the end of the season. According to reports, both parties believed they had developed a practice regimen that has kept Smith healthy. If the numbers add up, it appears likely that Smith will turn 34 and play in the NFL the following season.
