Fresh off consecutive Super Bowl victories, negotiations are set to kick off between the Chiefs and Andy Reid for a new contract, poised to elevate Reid to the apex of coaching salaries in football, according to NFL insiders.
General manager Brett Veach is also slated for a contract renewal, supplanting the final two years of their existing contracts inked after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV triumph in 2019.
Since then, Kansas City has clinched two more championships, culminating in their recent Super Bowl LVIII conquest over the San Francisco 49ers, marking the first back-to-back title triumph since the 2003-04 Patriots. Despite swirling retirement rumors, the 65-year-old Reid affirmed his commitment to lead the team in pursuit of a rare three-peat.
Throughout the previous season, league sources noted the anomaly of delaying contract extensions following a Super Bowl victory, a scenario unprecedented in Reid and Veach’s tenure, who had secured a second title in February 2020 and inked new six-year deals soon after.
Reid currently ranks around eighth in head coach annual salary and third in the AFC West, trailing Sean Payton and Jim Harbaugh’s recent lucrative deals. Conversely, Veach, aged 46, is reportedly among the least compensated GMs in the league.
While coach and GM contracts remain clandestine compared to player contracts, insiders estimate that at least six NFL coaches command salaries surpassing $15 million annually, even after the departures of Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll this offseason. The Chiefs’ delay in contract negotiations after their previous championship raised eyebrows across the league, defying the norm in modern NFL practices.
Following the Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl victory, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo secured a top-tier three-year contract, while special teams coordinator Dave Toub’s tenure was extended.
Now, attention turns to Reid and Veach, with new agreements potentially finalized ahead of the Annual League Meeting in March.
