Kevin Long, the former running back for the South Carolina Gamecocks and the New York Jets, has passed away at the age of 69. Long died on Tuesday, September 11, 2024, as confirmed by Curtis Frye, the former track coach at South Carolina and a close friend of Long. The university was informed of Long’s death by his wife, although the cause has not been disclosed.

Kevin Long’s football career began at the University of South Carolina, where he made a significant impact as a running back from 1973 to 1976. His standout performance during this time included becoming the first running back in the program’s history to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a single season, achieving 1,133 yards in 1975. This accomplishment marked a significant milestone in the university’s football history.

Over his career with the Gamecocks, Long accumulated a total of 2,372 rushing yards, which places him 10th on the school’s all-time rushing list. His contributions to the university’s football program were recognized with his induction into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the South Carolina Hall of Fame.

After his collegiate career, Long was drafted by the New York Jets in the seventh round of the 1977 NFL Draft. During his five seasons with the Jets, he made a notable impact, rushing for 2,190 yards and scoring 25 touchdowns. Additionally, Long caught 74 passes for 539 yards and three touchdowns. His tenure with the Jets was marked by solid performances and contributions to the team.

Following his time with the Jets, Long continued his professional football career in the United States Football League (USFL). His career in the USFL allowed him to extend his playing days and continue his involvement in professional football.

Kevin Long’s passing is a significant loss to the football community, and his achievements both at the collegiate and professional levels will be remembered by many. His legacy is preserved through his impressive statistics, his role in pioneering achievements for the South Carolina football program, and his contributions to the New York Jets and the USFL.
