Long died on Tuesday, September 11, 2024, as confirmed by Curtis Frye, the former track coach at South Carolina and a close friend of Long. The university was informed of Long’s death by his wife, although the cause has not been disclosed.

Kevin Long’s football career began at the University of South Carolina, where he made a significant impact as a running back from 1973 to 1976. His standout performance during this time included becoming the first running back in the program’s history to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a single season, achieving 1,133 yards in 1975. This accomplishment marked a significant milestone in the university’s football history.

Over his career with the Gamecocks, Long accumulated a total of 2,372 rushing yards, which places him 10th on the school’s all-time rushing list. His contributions to the university’s football program were recognized with his induction into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the South Carolina Hall of Fame.

After his collegiate career, Long was drafted by the New York Jets in the seventh round of the 1977 NFL Draft.
