Fury avoided making eye contact.
When Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk met prior to Saturday night’s undisputed heavyweight title battle, Fury avoided making eye contact.
WBO, WBA, and IBF champion Usyk and WBC champion Fury are both unbeaten, and the winner of this fight will become the heavyweight division’s first unchallenged champion since Lennox Lewis 25 years ago.
There has already been controversy leading up to the much awaited fight in Saudi Arabia, as a member of the Ukrainian side has already complained about the ring canvas.
However, there was barely any conversation between the boxers during the pre-fight news conference on Thursday night; they were just ready to get started.
One peculiar thing happened, though, as Fury approached his opponent for the customary face-off and refused to meet his gaze.
As is customary, Usyk turned to face the Brit while standing sideways, but Fury turned to face the audience instead, flexing his biceps and joining in on the background music before eventually exiting the stage.
Usyk attempted to catch a peek into the Gypsy King’s eyes before he departed, but he didn’t seem to be phased by his antics.
“He’s a scary looking dude,” Fury told Sky Sports as an explanation for his conduct.
Fury, who enjoys staring his opponents down, is uncommon in refusing the face-off, as it goes against tradition.
Later on, he would say, “I would like to thank Usyk for the challenge.” It’s my goal to perform.
