Authorities say an Arkansas football player was detained on suspicion of burglary and criminal mischief.
A defensive end for the Arkansas Razorback football team was taken into custody in Fayetteville on charges of burglary and criminal mischief.
According to an initial Washington County preliminary report, Stewart got into a fight with a woman a few days earlier, on December 10, when they were traveling to a casino with other people. According to the report, the event took place inside the car they were driving. Stewart was “pinching her on the knee and squeezing her upper right arm,” according to officials, which made the woman weep. According to the complaint, the gang chose to order Stewart to “get out” of the car and abandoned him on the side of the road.
Following their separation, the girl’s vehicle’s front window was reported to police as having been smashed, according to officials.” Witnesses, according to officials, said that Stewart had taken the girl’s laptop; the device was later discovered broken in the apartment complex parking garage. According to witnesses, Stewart entered her residence and stole something, according to police.
Stewart was seen entering the apartment and then “throwing the laptop against a brick wall and walking off” at the apartment garage, according to security footage that authorities were able to confirm. They were also able to view surveillance footage that showed someone approaching the girl’s car, but the vandalism was hidden by the camera’s perspective. A witness described the suspect’s car as being identical to Stewart’s when it arrived.
When officials saw this, they called Stewart, who, according to the release, “acknowledged there was an incident” on December 10 but would not speak without his attorney. After agreeing to meet with authorities outside his apartment, he was escorted to the Washington County jail, according to officials.
The 22-year-old is being charged with one count of first-degree criminal mischief and one count of breaking into a house. He has a hearing at the Washington County Circuit Court on December 15 at 7:45 a.m.
Stewart, a Jonesboro native and senior defensive end, is listed by the Razorbacks. He recorded a career-high 14 tackles in 10 games, six of which he started, during his collegiate campaign.
Stewart finished the season with seven total tackles.
Regarding the arrest, Kyle Parkinson, the university’s Associate Athletics Director for Communications, issued the following statement:
We are aware of the problem with Jashaud Stewart. He is on an indefinite leave of absence from the team. We will decide on his future standing with our football program once we have gathered and examined additional facts.
