head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals announces his resignation
Cincinnati — It looks like the Cincinnati Bengals will stick with their best coaches for a fifth straight season as several other NFL teams deal with coaching changes.
The remaining two NFL teams in search of a head coach, the Arizona Cardinals and the Indianapolis Colts, revealed this week that they will be hiring offensive and defensive coordinators from Philadelphia, respectively. While offensive coordinator Brian Callahan was being considered for the Colts role, Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo was a finalist for the Cardinals job.
Callahan and Anarumo Head coach Zac Taylor’s staff has had few exits since his arrival, thanks to his decision to remain in Cincinnati. Since 2019, the Bengals have had Callahan, tight ends coach James Casey, and quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher on the offensive side of the ball. Troy Walters, the wide receivers coach, has also been with the team since 2020.
Since 2019, Anarumo has employed senior defensive assistant Mark Duffner, assistant linebackers coach Jordan Kovacs, and secondary coach Robert Livingston. Marion Hobby, the defensive line coach, has also spent the last two seasons in Cincinnati. Since joining Marvin Lewis’ staff in 2003, Darrin Simmons has been the Bengals’ special teams coordinator for an even longer period of time than Taylor.
Consistency is a plus for players like linebacker Logan Wilson. Working with Anarumo for the previous three postseason seasons, he said, “has been excellent,” since they have been able to discuss system modifications or alterations that are only possible when everyone is familiar with it.
“He’s amazing,” Wilson exclaimed. “There isn’t a greater guy to play for, in my opinion.”
Quarterback Joe Burrow has also expressed nothing but praise for Callahan. The Bengals’ best players are still in Cincinnati, but it’s obvious they’ll be in the running for jobs down the road.
