The former Buccaneer head coach, Bruce Arian, wouldn’t mind returning.
Dave Merritt, a former secondary and safety coach for the New York Giants, joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019 and has since won three Super Bowls with the team—a feat most coaches would only dream of.
Though Merritt is appreciative of his chance to work with Andy Reid’s staff, he has entertained thoughts of going back to the Giants in the future.
During Super Bowl week, Merritt informed reporters for Newsday about a quick conversation the veteran coach had with Giants co-owner John Mara.

Merritt started his coaching career in 2001 as a defensive assistant and linebacker coach for the New York Jets. He joined the Giants in 2004 as a defensive assistant and quality control coach under new head coach Tom Coughlin. He was promoted in 2006 to the Giants’ secondary and safety coaching positions. He held the position for 14 years, including all of Coughlin’s tenure and the two years of his successor, Ben McAdoo.
With the Giants, Merritt won two Super Bowls in 2008 and 2011. He would remain with the Giants until 2018, at which point he accepted the Arizona Cardinals’ offer to coach defensive backs.
However, when the former NFL linebacker thinks back on his time as a coach, he is always struck by how nicely the Giants treated him and how much, like Kansas City, New York seems like home..
According to Merritt, it would be a dream come true if I could return to the Giants in any capacity. However, I will state this up front: My feelings for Kansas City and what Chiefs owner Mr. Clark Hunt has done here are unmatched. In terms of how they handle my family and me, they are on par with the New York Giants. It’s been wonderful.
