The Minnesota Twins’ offseason hasn’t ended, even though they’ve reported to spring training.
The Twins have approximately $16 million to spend on a player based on Dan Hayes of The Athletic’s initial forecast of $125 to $140 million back in December. The Twins could use an upgrade in various areas. Their expected salary is $123 million.
The Twins could be able to pounce on the remaining big names on the market and add some players that make sense as they get ready to build on their first postseason victory since 2003.
Starting pitching is one of the Twins’ top requirements going into the season, but unlike other seasons, depth is more important than a true ace.
After joining the team in a trade last winter, Pablo López has occupied the top slot in the rotation; nevertheless, the Twins lost Sonny Gray and Kenta Maeda to free agency, leaving 288.1 innings to be used this season.
One of the players the Twins have been linked to recently is Lorenzen, who recently finished a two-year stint. After going 5-7 with a 3.58 ERA in 18 starts for the Detroit Tigers, Lorenzen was selected for the All-Star team for the first time. However, after being moved to the Philadelphia Phillies at the trade deadline, he struggled to go 4-2 with a 5.51 ERA in 11 games (seven starts).
While Lorenzen’s 85.5 average exit velocity was in the 99th percentile during the 2019 season and he threw a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals last August, his numbers weren’t terrific a year ago either. Nevertheless, batters have occasionally had trouble matching up with him.
