On Thursday, Novak Djokovic revealed that he had surgery to repair a damaged meniscus in his right knee.
“After tearing a meniscus in my last match, I had to make some difficult decisions on the last day. Although I’m still getting over everything, I’m glad to let you know that the operation went well.
“I am incredibly grateful for the group of physicians that have supported me…
along with the tremendous support I’ve gotten from my followers.
“I’m going to try my hardest to get well and be ready to play again as soon as possible.
I’m motivated to compete at the highest level because I have a deep affection for this activity. Idemooo.
The Serbian player sustained an injury to his right knee while defeating Francisco Cerundolo in five sets. Even though he received treatment for his injured knee early in the second set, he managed to win, setting up a quarterfinal duel with Casper Ruud on Wednesday.
However, on Tuesday morning, he felt discomfort in his knee and had to withdraw from a Grand Slam mid-tournament for the first time in his professional career.
He may still be able to play after his Wimbledon championship defense on July 1 and the impending return of the Olympics to the slick Roland Garros courts in late August.
Although Djokovic doesn’t typically play in grass warm-ups, this year’s summer is jam-packed with events, so the decision to have surgery was made without delay.
