Ohio State head coach arrested on the way after altercation
Several sources state that a former Ohio State receivers coach was detained for allegedly breaking a civil protection order while attempting to pick up his kids from an elementary school.
The newspaper reports that Smith, 35, is scheduled to be arraigned early on Friday on minor counts related to his violation of the civil protection order.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to the Columbus Dispatch that while Smith did not physically harm anyone, he did become agitated and raise his voice during the altercation.
According to Brad Koffel, Smith’s lawyer, Courtney Smith orchestrated the incident as part of a “malicious move” to have her ex-husband arrested at the school and in front of their kids.
The Blade was informed by Courtney Smith’s lawyer that the primary school was not the appropriate place for the couple to pick up their kids.
Attorney Julia Leveridge told the newspaper that Courtney was put in a room apart from Mr. Smith by school staff in an attempt to protect her. Mr. Smith got into a fight with staff members at the primary school after entering, and they called the police.
According to the statement, Courtney Smith “remains in dread for her safety.”
Leveridge expressed regret that Mr. Smith disregarded court instructions instead of prioritizing the children of the parties.
After Ohio State’s Board of Trustees suspended coach Urban Meyer for three games without pay in August due to his mishandling of domestic abuse charges against his former assistant coach, Smith’s arrest is the most recent public development concerning his ex-wife.
